“I called my wine range ‘Rusty Mutt’ as I was born in the Year of The Metal Dog in Chinese Astrology. Metal Dog was then ‘Australianised’ to Rusty Mutt.”

“The Vermilion Bird is a wine that sits above. Continuing the celestial theme, according to Chinese astrology the Southern quadrant of the sky is watched over by the Vermilion Bird of the South. “McLaren Vale Shiraz to sweep you off your feet. This Vermilion Bird has wings that will help you fly to higher places. It’s a keeper for sure. Dark chocolate and mocha early plus a whisper of caramel. Luscious melted chocolate feels through the mouth deliver complex and generous fruit before some cedar starts to seeps through its veins. Having said all that, it’s layered on thick yet there’s an elegance about it. Brown spices reach out long on a sustained finish. Simply, this is excellent drinking.”

“Very different vintage conditions in 2014 have produced wonderfully intense, bright and concentrated fruit aromas and flavours in this wine. The fruit comes forward before even the brand new French oak which contained it for two and a half years. Once you see past the fruit, there’s a great tannin structure and ample acidity to bring it all together into a very intense, complex and long-lived Shiraz indeed. An Elegant cool climate style with youthful purple hues, fresh dark fruit aromas and a tightly structured palate loaded with dark cherry and mulberry flavours. 5 Stars.”

Shiraz

The combination of differing geology, soil and micro climates in the McLaren Vale region promotes a rich diversity in fruit. Proximity to the ocean brings cool nights during the summer which is critical for slower ripening and retaining acidity in the wine. At Rusty Mutt, I select parcels of fruit from different areas to bring complexity to my wines.

TASTING NOTES

“The aroma leads with a sweet oak lactone with a hint of vanilla, perfectly supplementing the black cherry and mulberry notes. Time in the glass reveals licorice and fruit infused dark chocolate. There’s a real intensity on the palate. Distinctive dark cherry flavours with a chocolate element are evident initially, then spice, dried herbs and aged savoury meats are revealed. Grippy oak tannins provide a very ample structure which finishes fine and strong.”
