The ‘Savvy Wren’ was named for my sister, who was born the Chinese Year of the Rat. The Superb Blue Wren, native to the Fleurieu Peninsula, is an equally savvy and clever creature. Read my blog post about the Rat and the Wren and their amazing similarities!

This wine's time has come to an end, but now I have a new range. Vin Sōl is my new label. Same hands, same love of McLaren Vale, and now a new chapter to the story.

Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris (also known as Pinot Grigio) is a white variety originating in France, that is a genetic variation of Pinot Noir. Wines are deliberately called either 'Pinot Gris' or 'Pinot Grigio' roughly based on style. 'Gris' is the colour grey in French, and 'Grigio' is grey in Italian. A more 'French' style wine with weight and fruit sweetness is labelled Gris, and the Italian Grigio style is tight and crisp with more of an acid line.

Given the generosity of fruit and palate weight from McLaren Vale, Pinot Gris was the style and hence the name that won!

Tasting Notes; The colour is a mid to light straw with youthful green hues. Initially, a note of spice opens the aroma, followed by Nashi Pear and Granny Smith apple. Citrus blossom and white nectarine characters build with time in the glass. The palate begins with an almost luscious apple and citrus fruit flavour, which then rolls to the side revealing a citrus zest and stone fruit mid palate texture. Pear skin and savoury spice combine with refreshing acidity to a food-friendly finish.

If you're looking for food pairing ideas for your McLaren Vale Pinot Gris, here are some suggestions to try:

Seafood

Chicken

Chicken dishes, especially those that are lightly seasoned or grilled, are another great pairing for McLaren Vale Pinot Gris. The wine's crisp acidity pairs well with the lean protein of the chicken, while its fruit flavors provide a nice contrast to the savory flavors of the meat.

Salads

Pinot Gris is a great wine to pair with salads, particularly those that contain fresh, crisp ingredients like lettuce, cucumber, and apple. The wine's acidity helps to balance out the sweetness of the fruit, while its light body won't overwhelm the delicate flavors of the salad.

Asian cuisine
