2020 Catnip Viognier

$28.00

The Catnip Viognier was named for my wife, who is a ‘Wood Tiger’ in Chinese Astrology. It’s her wine, since cats really love Catnip! You won’t find any ‘cats-pee’ characters in Viognier, nor any cat hair on your clothes. Instead, you’ll purr with delight when you crack one of these with dinner!

Named after Scott’s wife’s Chinese Zodiac Sign, ‘Wood Tiger’ features a mid straw colour with green hues, denoting clarity. One can taste lemon curd, a touch of dried apricot and guava, and orange blossom. The palate is sweet yet citrus acidic. Fermented with selected steel in stainless steel and bottled immediately.

Description
The white for McLaren Vale?

Viognier

When choosing a white wine to produce from McLaren Vale, I looked at the varieties that grow well here and the corresponding region in France. Shiraz and Grenache are the stand out red varieties of McLaren Vale which also grow very well in the Rhone region of France. One of the most interesting whites from this area is Viognier (Condrieu appellation). As it turns out, Viognier is the 4th largest white variety by tonnes crushed in McLaren Vale so finding some was quite easy! I made the wine in a fresh aromatic style, completely un-oaked. It looks a bit like a Sauvignon Blanc on the nose and a Chardonnay on the palate.

Tasting Notes; “The colour is a mid straw with youthful green hues and good clarity. A fresh and ripe fruit nose, displaying orange blossom, lemon curd, a touch of dried apricot and guava. The palate has some forward fruit sweetness balanced well by bright citrus acidity. There’s also some spice, orange peel, quince, ginger and lime flavours filling out the palate. The mouthfeel is both fine and ample, finishing on a refreshing and satisfying note.” Scott Heidrich, Winemaker.

Winestate Review May/June 2021

“Fresh lifted and not too oily with restrained floral/stonefruit nose and a nicely textured full-bodied palate with plavours of peaches. Needs time.” Rated 4 1/2 stars – TOP WINE IN CATEGORY
